I ask what decision this is for
I start by asking who reads the output and what they do with it. That usually changes what I build. A lot of dashboards go unused because nobody asked that first.
If I get asked twice, I automate it
Recurring questions become a model or a scheduled report instead of a manual pull. It's mostly why my second month on a reporting cycle takes so much less time than the first.
